Fresh 48, Newborn Session, or both?

I get this question a lot, so I thought I would elaborate a few points on this one.

These two sessions differ quite a bit! I have some clients who book both because they want each type of shoot to capture all of the moments in the beginning of your baby’s time here. Some will also do just 1 of the sessions, and I think any route you choose will work great for your family’s style.

Fresh 48:

For those of you that are unfamiliar, a Fresh 48 session is typically when a photographer goes to the hospital postpartum room to capture your time there before you go home. These sessions are normally under an hour long.

The benefits of a Fresh 48 session:

  • You don’t have to travel anywhere, the photographer comes to you.

  • The baby’s fresh details are captured. They change so quickly in that first week! Getting the details like their pruny toes, squished expressions, fingernails, and the hair on their shoulders and cheeks that hasn’t fallen off yet.

  • If you like Lifestyle shoots, this is a great one for you. There’s less posing, and more of a documentary style. I try to capture your time here with baby, holding and snuggling them. I get some individual photos of the baby as well, in their hospital basinet. Some hospital rooms have great windows and it really makes a cool setting for pictures.

  • If you have other kids, I can capture them meeting baby for the first time.

  • Looking at these images in a few years will help you remember that time, that is really hazy in the moment of!

Newborn Sessions:

These are typically held in my studio in the first 5-14 days after baby’s birthday. These normally take around 2-3 hours.

The benefits of a newborn session:

  • My studio has everything needed for a session, such as wraps, blankets, props, headbands, hats, baby outfits, etc. You just bring the baby!

  • We can take family and sibling poses during the session.

  • I can pose baby wrapped, unwrapped, in different props and colors so you get a variety of images in your finished gallery.

  • These sessions give you a lot of great images that you can hang on the wall at home! I personally like to keep newborn images of my kids up at home, because it’s such an amazing memory.

  • We also get details captured at this session, such as tiny toes and fingers, so you can always remember how small they once were.

Both of these are wonderful to have done in this time of your life! Choosing one or both, you can’t go wrong!
