What can I expect when I book a Newborn Session?
When you hire a photographer for your newborn session, there are several things you can expect. Here's what usually happens:
Scheduling: When you first book with me, we won’t schedule the actual session, but I will put your due date on the calendar. Unless you’re having a scheduled c-section or induction. Babies like to arrive on their own schedule, so I find it’s best to wait until they are born! It's ideal to schedule the session within the first two weeks of the baby's birth while they are still sleepy and more likely to curl up in adorable poses. What has worked best, is when the parents message me before they are discharged from the hospital, and we will get it on the calendar.
Preparation:
Before your session, i’ll send you a questionnaire to be filled out. This asks you about your outfits, your preferences for colors, etc. Once that’s filled out, I will send you a detailed e-mail with information to help you prepare for the shoot.Studio Environment: The session usually takes place in my studio. The studio will be warm to keep the baby comfortable, since they are used to being in a cozy environment. I will have various props, blankets, wraps, and accessories to create beautiful and safe setups. There is a bathroom in my studio building, and places for you to sit and relax during the session.
Patience and Flexibility: Newborn sessions require patience as babies can be unpredictable and may need breaks for feeding, diaper changes, or soothing. Because the baby is boss and we go at their pace, the session goes anywhere from 2-3 hours on average.
Poses and Setups: I will go through various poses and setups, capturing your baby in different props and positions. These poses may include the baby sleeping on their tummy, wrapped snugly in a swaddle, or curled up in a basket. I prioritize the safety and comfort of the baby throughout the session.
Focus on Details: Newborn sessions are a great time to capture the sweet details baby has. Some things I have liked to add into the gallery have been the tiny toes, fingers, hair, and profiles.
Parents and Siblings: If wanted, we can include parents and siblings in the session photos. We can do different combinations such as the whole family, each parent with the baby, and siblings. It's a great opportunity to capture the connection during this exciting time!
Duration and Breaks: Newborn sessions typically last around 2-3 hours, but it can vary depending on the baby's needs. It's good to allow plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and diaper changes. It’s best to be aware of this when making plans for your day. Try to avoid scheduling any appointments shortly after the session’s start time.
Post-Session: After the shoot, I will take around 2-3 weeks to edit the images. When editing newborns, I like to keep as many details on them as possible. I will normally edit out any scratches on their face, red blotches from sensitive skin, or pimples. When they are finished I send them to you via e-mail in an online gallery. You are able to keep the photos, and print them where you please. I do offer products, albums, and prints if you would like!
Remember that all photographers have different styles and approaches, so it's important to choose a photographer that has a style that you love. Communicate any ideas, concerns, or special requests that you might have beforehand, to ensure a successful photoshoot!
